The first events of the 2012 Specsavers Series staged by the Beau Sejour Barracudas Swimming Club got underway this week with some exciting swimming and 2 Championship records being set.

The first record of the Series and fastest time of the day overall in the freestyle went to Miles Munro in 24.28 just one hundredth of a second faster than the record set by Thomas Hollingsworth in this event last year.

The fastest time of the day from the girls came from Courtney Butcher in a brilliant swim in the 14/15 age group, as she broke the 50m freestyle record set by Gail Strobridge back in the year 2000 to set a new time of 28.52. 

The fastest times of the day in the breaststroke came from Thomas Hollingsworth and Nicole Hewlett who recorded 31.09 and 35.90 respectively.

Competing in the Specsavers Series for the very first time were the Barracudas who will reach their ninth birthday during this year.

The honours were shared in the girl’s event, with Susie Russell winning the breaststroke and Tatiana Tostevin winning the freestyle recording 52.34 and 38.50 respectively, both personal best times.

The nine year old boy’s titles went to Max Lord in the breaststroke and Elliot Lock in the freestyle both in excellent times 1.03.25 and 42.10 respectively.

Sophie Wilcox (10 years) looked strong in the 50m freestyle as she improved on her personal best by over 3 seconds to secure first place in 37.75 but had to be content  with second place in the breaststroke as Anna Cliff took the honours in 52.00.

In the same age group Tom Stapley topped the rostrum in both events with great personal best times of 35.72 in the freestyle and 51.90 in the breaststroke.

Sasha Walker (11 years) continues to shine in the breaststroke events as she won the 50m in a personal best time of 46.45, with Orla Rabey looking strong in the freestyle recording a very creditable time of 34.64

Louis Tostevin and Tom Symes representing the 11 year olds had a very close tussle in both events with Louis eventually emerging as the victor in both events recording 33.56 in the freestyle and 45.12 in the breaststroke.

Victoria Symes gained maximum points in the Series winning both events in the 12/13 age group. She recorded 31.08 in the freestyle sharing the time with second placed Honor Anderson and 39.83 in the breaststroke.

The 12/13 boys events saw William Russell storm home in 31.73 in the freestyle and 40.67 in the breaststroke.  

William Mansell and Adam Ashcroft swam head to head in the 14/15 age group breaststroke event with Mansell gaining the touch in a personal best of 37.48.  The girl’s equivalent title going to Annalise Munro in 37.27

The swimmer showing the greatest improvement on her entered time was nine year old Sophie Lanoe ho knocked over 6 seconds off her previous best in the 50m freestyle to finish in 53.21.
