Melbourne experience holds Hollingsworth in good stead

Tom HollingsworthTom Hollingsworth is something of a reluctant star. He loves his swimming, he is dedicated to it and, of course, he is extremely talented to boot.

Yet he still harbours that modest element of surprise when approached for an interview and the bashful grin that really came to prominence when he starred in the Shetland Island Games of 2005 remains.

Beneath it, though, is someone who has matured well and is preparing for his second crack at a Commonwealth Games.

Yeates & Parfit Set Standards over 400m

Ross YeatesRoss Yeates recorded the fastest time of the day in the 400m freestyle event of the NRG Series staged by the Beau Sejour Barracudas Swimming Club.

While slightly outside of his personal best, he swam a storming race to finish over six seconds ahead of his nearest rival to win the 16-and-over age group in a great time of 4-19.12.

Improving on her personal best by three seconds, Lotte Parfit smashed Gail Strobridge’s record.

In a well-paced swim, Parfit was pushed by her older sister Victoria to record a lifetime best of 4-41.18, which was the fastest time of the day overall from the girls, which also secured her maximum points in the Series in the 14/15 age group.

Victoria annihilated her personal best, improving by over eight seconds to touch in a great time of 4-42.26 to win the 16-and-over category.

The second record to fall in the championships went to Miles Munro in the 12/13 age group.

Despite being just outside of his best, he still managed to take Matt Allen’s record in an excellent time of 4-39.48 to finish well ahead of his nearest rival

Star man Hubert flying high

With more than 250 swimmers from 11 UK and Channel Island clubs, the Beau Sejour Barracudas contingent of 32 swimmers enjoyed a string of successes at the AIB Tigers Open Swim Meet staged in Jersey and returned with a host of medals and personal best times.

The event, staged at Les Quennevais Sports Centre, provided early season competition on the doorstep and gave swimmers the opportunity to see how their preparations were going in readiness for forthcoming major competition.

Many had their sights set on securing Hampshire County qualifying times – one of the first events in the 2010 swimming calendar.

Man of the match was undoubtedly Island Games medallist Ian Hubert, who dominated the butterfly events in the senior age group winning gold in the 50, 100 and 200 fly, producing a personal best in the 50m distance of 26.72sec.

Newsflash

Despair turned to terrific excitement for the Elizabeth College relay teams at the weekend.

Following initial fears that their chance to compete at the English Schools Swimming Association Team Nationals finals would be scuppered due to adverse weather conditions, they eventually grabbed their unexpected opportunities with both hands.

As master in charge Brain Allen explained: ‘To reach a national swimming final is a goal that makes all the training and years of hard work worthwhile, so you can imagine how the team felt when they heard the announcement that Birmingham Airport was closed due to snow.

‘They were devastated.’
